I managed to get my hands on a couple of Game Boy Pockets that weren’t in the best of shape:

Yech. The black unit has a serious case of LCD crusting:

and the green unit has water damage that’s been in there for I don’t even know how long:

Sickening. Ugh. Let’s crack them open.

There’s definitely corrosion here – see the staining at the bottom of the board. The volume and contrast controls are sticky as well. Ugh.

More bad news! The layers of the PCB are peeling away! This board is shot. BEGONE.
The black unit was actually very clean and powered up normally, albeit with a totalled display. Some eBay hunting later and we come up with a replacement stock screen and a mainboard!

Let’s get to work.
